Abstract

The aim of the paper is to analyze the economic performance of the Metropolitan Region of Sí£o Paulo (MRSP) and its relative importance in the national and international contexts. In the first part, we discuss economic and demographic growth differences between the main Brazilian metropolitan areas, as well as the differences between the internal dynamics of the sub-regions that form the MRSP. In the second part, we analyze the structural changes of the MRSP, the nature of their crises and their productive restructuring. In the third part, we evaluate the position and role of the MRSP in the International and Inter-regional Division of Labor. The last part discusses the urban and economic integration between the MRSP and four neighboring urban industrial areas, formed by Campinas, Sí£o José dos Campos, Sorocaba and Santos and the possibility that they come to constitute a City-Region, with strong polarization forces.
