Abstract

The city of Porto Alegre is one of the venues of the 2014 FIFA World Cup games in Brazil. Because of this, several works to adequate the city urban inÍ€astructure have been planned to prepare the city for the tournament. is paper presents the works which are agreed between FIFA and the Brazilian government agencies, their location within the city and what their expected impacts on urban space. It also brieÍy contextualizes how the urban space has been produced in recent decades with the aim of demonstrating that some forms that seemed to have been overcome reappear at this moment. Finally, it discusses the consequences of these changes for the city as a whole and its citizens, questioning the kind of legacy that the World Cup will leave in Porto Alegre.
