Abstract

Sustainable development is one of the issues that has concentrated the attention of diverse academic fields, especially in developing countries. However, eÍ€fforts have been limited to describe and decompose the economic, social and environmental dimensions of this issue neglecting its measurement and evaluation. ÍThe design of indicators, a normal action in other contexts, embodies a diÍ‚culty to obtain integrated results. Regularly, the trend is to obtain independent measures for each dimension, that are then averaged into a sole indicator. In an attempt to overcome these procedures and to animate this debate, this paper proposes a General Index of Sustainable Performance originated ̓from local indicators for the city of Bogota, using multivariate statistical techniques for its processing. ÍThe objective is to provide a tool that supports decision making for researchers and local authorities.
