Abstract

Even though information and communication technologies have contributed to the deconcentration of productive activities, they have also led to the territorial concentration of the production of knowledge-based information. In this context, a growth of cities has been identified as the prevalent mode of human settlement. Supposedly, the interaction of this process with the development of information and communication technologies should bring about an increase in the proximity among people, thus developing more fluid social ties. However, this interaction cannot escape the dispersing effects generated by capital globalization. This paper deals precisely with this paradoxical development of informational society.
