The paper discusses aspects of the urban size of Sí£o Paulo city and its metropolitan area. The first section deals with population growth and its dimensions, considering both the absolute values and its dynamic aspects. Since population moves for economic reasons, although not exclusively, the attractiveness of the city for business is considered, through the use of comparative profitability indicators. The third section presents comparative indicators for the quality of life, including crime, congestion, pollution etc. The joint analysis of these indicators with both population and business attractiveness indicators poses important issues for the future of the city. This is dealt with in the final section of the paper, in which aspects of financing public infrastructure are also discussed.
