Abstract

Is Í there Í a Í relationship Í between Í people's socioeconomic Í level Í and Í the Í quality Í ofÍ the Í environment Í in which Í they Í live? To answer Í this question, Í spatial autocorrelation was usedÍ to Í associate a Í social and Í economic Í index with an Í environmental one, using Í the Í census Í tracts ofÍ Mar del Plata (Argentina). This demonstrated a positive answer to the question, i.e. those whoÍ possess economic resources have the capacity to live in a healthy environment. The integration ofÍ the variables of these two indices in a cluster analysis showed a spatial configuration similar toÍ that obtained with the spatial autocorrelation. This reflected the need to improve environmentalÍ conditions in those less favored sectors as, in addition to the economic context, a healthy environment Í is one of the factors necessary for good quality of life.
