Abstract

The rapid ageing of the Portuguese population will lead to a reduction in
the working age population together with an increase in the proportion of older workers.
Although this is a national trend, the aggregate phenomenon may hide varying regionalÍ dynamics, which need to be highlighted. In this work, an analysis is made of the regionalÍ differences regarding the ageing of the workforce in the two decades between 1989 andÍ 2009, using a shift-share analysis that allows researchers to distinguish between the nationalÍ effect (macroeconomic growth), the proportional effect (industrial mix), and theÍ differential effect (local factors). In looking at the age premium regarding earnings on bothÍ a national scale and for each individual region, the authors investigate and quantify theÍ impact of the shifts in the educational structure of two age groups Í€“ workers under 55 yearsÍ old and older workers.
